THE INTERACTIVE
EDUCATIONAL BUS

Peru's education quality levels rank among the lowest in the Latin American region. There is an urgent need for the vast majority of children to have access to quality education, which will allow them to reach their highest physical, emotional, intellectual, social and ethical potential. Recent investigations have demonstrated that a low-cost and effective way to improve education standards is by means of early intervention and stimulating young children developing their skills through interactions with their environment.

In Peru , education is not provided in the early childhood years of disadvantaged children; it is not until they turn 5 or 6 years old that children have access to public school's education. With this initial disadvantage, it won't be possible to reach the much-needed acceptable education levels in Peru .

“The Interactive Educactional Bus” will address the need for provision of basic early childhood education for urban marginalized children by involving all the key agents in their education: the children themselves, the teachers and the parents.

The project's main goal is to strengthen the work of WAWAWASI centers by providing them with the methodologies and tools to promote children's integral development. The project will develop workshops to train teachers in early childhood intervention practices and promote the role of parents in their child's development through appropriate information materials.

The Bus, a mobile space equipped with the appropriate pedagogical materials to promote early childhood development, will visit WAWAWASIS centers in the most impoverished urban areas. By training their teachers, involving parents in the child' learning process and implementing activities for children to learn from their own experiences, the project has an integral approach to early childhood education for at risk children.

Thanks to grants from Western Union and AVINA Foundation this project has received US$ 30,000 to implement and equip the Bus, to elaborate the training and information materials for teachers and parents, and is ready to visit 250 WAWAWASIS in 2005. However, the project still needs support to provide each WAWAWASI center with educational materials for the children.
